The Most Pressing KM Problem I Have (Right Now)

The Most Pressing KM Problem I Have  - Right Now

There are so many frustrating problems that I have experienced that I would love to tackle. For example, I have encountered in many companies the hoarding of information by subject matter experts. Often I find that this is a culture change that has to happen so that people do not feel that hoarding of information is a way to create job security. Another problem that I have encountered is the lack of sponsorship by the executive staff. I often find that mixed messages are sent to the employees in that they are to prioritize KM activities but will no support is given to them in the way of time or resources.

Unfortunately, I was recently laid off from my current position. Do to this, I would say that my most pressing KM problem is to get companies to understand what KM actually is and what it can do for their company. It is simply hard to find KM related jobs, and even when there are postings, I find that they do not understand what KM is and what activities are entailed. So how do we get the word out to corporations that KM is a necessary part of everyday business that will show lasting benefits to the company? And more importantly, how do we get those jobs posted (with the proper credentials) and expand the job search for these postings?

  1. So so sorry about this recent change. I could not agree more that getting companies to under KM is a serious challenge. It's very difficult to find specific KM jobs for a variety of reasons we should explore. Mostly, there's the unfortunate burden around management and consulting fads, that make things like "KM," "Quality," and a variety of other tools or concepts appear to have a cycle, then a sunset. Interestingly, most of the "new" stuff is recycled spin. You might enjoy/benefit from this article: Grant, K. (2015). Knowledge management: an enduring but confusing fashion.
