Why Am I Here - as it relates to course 60303 ;)

Why Am I Here?

A Deeply Un-Philosophical Answer to the Question.

The simplest answer I could give to this question is I am here (taking this course) because it is required for the completion of my Masters Degree in Knowledge Management. How I got to this point might be a little more interesting.

I started down a path in the Life Sciences receiving a Bachelors Degree in Biology from Westminster College. I was going to be a doctor. I was going to help people. I completed all my studies, did several internships, and even took the MCAT. Then life happened and after getting married and moving to Ohio, I realized that I might need to focus on bringing money in to help with bills instead of paying money out to continue my education.

I stayed in my field and I have had a very successful career working my way up through Corporate America in the Quality Assurance discipline. I have done everything from execute testing scripts to manage global teams and I love what I do. I struggled with the fact that I had not accomplished the dream that I had started to pursue, but ultimately realized that I completely succeeded in my main goal - I was helping people.

The study of KM was something that I had never heard of until I was researching what advanced degree I would like to pursue. Sharing of knowledge and retention of that knowledge is something that I have always tried to teach and instill in every culture of which I have been a part. I have a true passion for learning and teaching. That is what I believe is at the heart of KM, and I look forward to expanding on ways that I can help organizations realize and maintain this asset.

  1. What a great post! Thank you for your honesty and direct answers/reflection. In my observations, research and own life, if we don't have a clear part of our work that involves serving others, our work existence won't enhance our lives. What I think might be interesting is exploring how and where we can do that wherever we're working, now and in the future; in that sense, it may call into question if certain roles like medicine, social work and other very clear services, are the ONLY ones who have such clarity. The learning and teaching part of your current work is very clearly related to a lot of KM in 60303 is positioned: as "helping," as "service," and as indeed education throughout any organization.
